These affordable, reusable planters are ideal for cost-conscious gardeners that have limited space, but still desire to grow healthy produce and fresh herbs. Each planter takes up a modest 14” x 14” footprint, allowing for multiple bags to be grown in a relatively small space. Use the smaller cultivars of herbs so that no particular species takes over and dominates the whole planter. Annual varieties are recommended over perennial herbs.
Leaf or bunch lettuce and spinach grows very well in these bags. Harvest two crops per year by sowing seeds in early spring and late summer.
Select strawberries that produce fruit bearing runners than can be allowed to cascades down the sides of the planter, or re-potted and used to establish new plants without the expense of purchasing new stock.
The use of poly-acrylamide such as soil moist and generous amounts of moisture retentive bedding materials such as compost or coir fibers will help prevent planters from drying out too quickly. Add top mulch to assist with water retention.
